From the recording Under the Lamp Moon and Bittersweet - 1997
About the tragic career - and death - of Pete Ham, from Badfinger. Great band.
So sad.
This comes across as WAY too preachy now. But at the time I was naive and just couldn't understand how such a tragedy could unfold.
I hear a bit of R.E.M. in this one, in addition to the few Badfinger lyrics I referenced here and there.
Lyrics
You said in a way the sun has shone on me
Maybe I'm blind but I simply do not see
Why you weren't safe from your own hand
And the cross worn around your neck
Didn't you wonder, as you started to wreck?
Don't you know there's a stronger thing
That's keeping me together
It such a pity that I can't sing
The same thing about you
Lonely you
Lonely you
Yes you were a pawn
In someone else's game
But in the end
You're the only one to blame
For turning yourself into a shooting star
And the cross worn around your neck
Didn't you wonder, as you started to wreck?
Don't you know there's a stronger thing
That's keeping me together
It such a pity that I can't sing
The same thing about you
Lonely you
Lonely you
I know you found it hard to smile
Your disappointment grew
And all the while
Your gifts were there
Gasping for air
Don't you know there's a stronger thing
That's keeping me together
It such a pity that I can't sing
The same thing about you
Lonely you
Lonely you
And the cross worn around your neck
Didn't you wonder, as you started to wreck?
Don't you know there's a stronger thing
That's keeping me together
It such a pity that I can't sing
The same thing about you
Lonely you
Lonely you
Lonely you
Lonely you
