From the recording Under the Lamp Moon and Bittersweet - 1997
My ode to the genius of XTC's Andy Partridge.
Some of the lyrics are plastic and unimaginative, but most of the words are excellent IMHO. I'm proud of the sound, vibe, arrangement, and lyrical imagery in this song. Even a few lame vocal deliveries can't hold back the love....
I'm rather fond of the falsetto vocals at the end, too. And the fact that the final chord doesn't resolve.
Thank you Andy.
Lyrics
Hummingbird
Dipping at the feeder
Wrench away but you must return
For more is what you need
And you didn't fill up
When will you ever learn?
Humming word
Sing-songing in my heart
Lift me up I'm made of eiderdown
Spill over 'til I say what I cannot say
Turn anvil heart into mossy ground
I wanna be real
Don't want to discuss the weather
And this void you feel
Could be filled with something better
Than the best this world has to give
Than the best this world has to give
Take it away
Take it away
Take it away, my friend, away
Take it away, my friend, away
I wanna be real
Don't want to discuss the weather
And this void you feel
Could be filled with something better
Than the best this world has to give
Than the best this world has to give
Hummingworld
Slow down and cool your jets
Why try to chase the setting sun
You beat yourself
With brassy ring like Tantalus
When will you ever learn
Hummingbird
Dipping at the feeder
Wrench away but you must return
For more is what you need
And you didn't fill up
When will you ever learn?
