  1. Sunflower

From the recording Mercywheel - 1999

A little slice of pop written about the first time I fell in love.... way, way, way back in 1985 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada Her name was Jane Conwell, we met in high school English class, and she was a better person that I ever turned out to be.

Pretty catchy, it also refers to truly, genuinely falling in love with music and enjoying my first serious band.... Rain For A Day (1985-1988).

Interesting details include:
1) A few nice violin overdubs from my friend Heather Tiel
2) Some pretty tongue-in-check lyrics
3) A snappy middle-8 section with good rhythm
4) Some good use of feedback here and there

Inspiration from The Go-Betweens and R.E.M.

Lyrics

I still think about you
Back when we were in high school
Walking to and from the station
Just trying to look so cool
And if I try real, real hard
I can almost see in me
The person that you loved back then
The person that I used to be

We were young that's for sure
Never knew where we were going
We were young baby that's for sure
And I held your small hands knowing
And when that band began to play
Yesterday
That's when I fell into love

I think I can picture you still
Sitting 'cross the table from me
And the checkered floor at Divino's Grill
Oh that was the place to be
And if I try real, real hard
I can almost catch your words
And through all these years
And bittersweet tears
They're the sweetest sound that I've heard

I was young, that's for sure
Sorry to be so alarming
You were brave, that you were
To see this geek as some prince charming
But when that band began to play
It pretty much made my day
That's when I fell into love
Hold on

We were young that we were
Never knew where we were going
We were young baby that's for sure
And I held your small hands knowing
And when that band began to play
Yesterday
That's when I fell in love

I was young, that's for sure
Sorry to be so alarming
You were brave, that you were
To see this geek as some prince charming
But when that band began to play
It pretty much made my day
That's when I fell into love

To this day - more than words can say - I regret that I couldn't live out the final lines. I failed, it's hard to admit, and I am sorry for this.
