  1. Like A Poet

From the recording Mercywheel - 1999

Ahhhh yes.... perfect for weddings and funerals.

I'm fond of the tune, the words, and the arrangement, but I could never sing it nearly as well as the song deserved. My voice is just too damn nasal to be 'pretty'. Oh well.

I like the middle section, where it builds and gets a bit of an edge before resolving back into the final verse. Other stuff I like:

1) The acoustic guitars throughout
2) The false ending (gotcha!)
3) The electric-guitar licks at the end
4) The lack of resolution on the ending

The words and music came to me pretty quickly... within 2 hours, if I remember correctly. I sang this song at my maternal Grandmother's funeral in 2001.

Lyrics

When the laughter has ceased
And all the tears are gone
And I can finally lay my troubles down

When words have failed me
For the very last time
And my ears turn deafly towards the sound

I hope you'll know
That I loved you like a poet loves the sky
Like a poet loves the sky

The last time I watch sunset
Draw her bloody sword
When providence eludes even my hand

When I finally hear the Big Music
Behind those Big Doors
When I enter and take my place with the band

I hope you'll know
That I loved you like a poet loves the sky
Like a poet.... loves the sky

Talking to a man
I found our conversation free
And he said:
"Watch your kids, you should become
what you want them to be"
Then I realized the man was me....

When the laughter has ceased
And all the tears are gone
And I can finally lay my troubles down

When words have failed me
For the very last time
And my ears turn deafly towards the sound

I hope you'll know
That I loved you like a poet loves the sky
Like a poet loves the sky
Loves the sky

Like a poet loves the sky...
