  1. Look At Me

From the recording Skyhouse & Scarlet - 2001

Kinda channeling Bono's arena-rock vocals here.  I like this song, which was inspired by The Posies' huge power pop sound, along with Queen's even bigger dynamic range. Don't hear the Queen thing?  Listen closely to the middle-8, where it goes quiet-LOUD-quiet.

I kinda like the lyrics, which feature the only known rock-usage of the word 'pinchbeck' in the known universe.

Got some huge-ass guitar sounds on this puppy, too. Loud and proud.

This one's about the struggle between what I want to do and, well... reality. It took a long time to build up the opening crowd sequence on the CD version, but I wanted to start the record with something unusual... to create an atmosphere before hitting (or 'pistol-whipping') the listener with this song.

PS - Love the guitar feedback going into the final set of choruses.

Lyrics

In my head you know I'm famous
They haven't seen one like me in years
The interviews and great reviews keep coming
From the press corps that's between my ears

But I really want to say to you
I really want to say to you
Say to you...

That playing in front of all these screaming millions
Is the loneliest thing I've ever tried
And still it's hard, to the leave the gleaming spotlight
But I hear Your silent voice inside, saying

Look at Me,
I'm right here waiting
Where you always are
Can't you see?
I hung the planets
But you're My only star
Why do you love Me from afar?

I want to sit, holding court before my fan
Instead I crawl, in pinchbeck lotusland
I mean everything I say (I really do)
But no one's listening anyway

In my head I know I'm dreaming
The cheering masses have all gone home
The folding chairs are stacked and standing silent
But I hear Your voice and swear I'm not alone

Look at Me,
I'm right here waiting
Where you always are
Can't you see?
I hung the planets
But you're My only star
Why do you love Me from afar?
