From the recording Skyhouse & Scarlet - 2001

A rather warm, yet melancholy tune about my daughters. One minute they
were pumped up with attitude, straining so hard to grow up. The next minute, they could be reduced to the meek tears of little girls when something went wrong. The ebb and flow was amazing to watch.

This jazzy little number features cool chords, a walking bass line, tasty trumpet, a tapping-drumstick rhythm, and a nice little false ending.

No one ever told me that sorrow could lead to such swoon.

Lyrics

No need to speak
The tears say it all
Your transparent grief
Reveals the soul behind the wall

Strip down the ego,
Raise up the white flag high...
You're beautiful when you cry.

The years have made you complex
I can't understand
Can't even begin
Then suddenly something hits you,
And you're a little girl again

Strip down the ego,
Raise up the white flag high...
You're beautiful when you cry.

Just got a message from a star they call 'Serious'
If you show me your pain, they won't call me delirious
But I'll pillar your frown,
Lay your head down,
I won't let you drown... in the libations of the sad.

And I could hold you
More for beauty than for pity
No one ever told me
That sorrow could lead to such swoon
And I'm over the moon

And it's unfathomable as the night sky,
But you're beautiful when you cry...

Yes, you're beautiful when you cry.
