From the recording The New Bright Children - 2012

This song fades in from the end of the previous song using the sound of a guitar processed through an analog synthesizer. Sonic chemistry.

Lyrically, this is a collection of life observations over the years. I like it when the bass guitar gets a little funkier with the 2nd verse. I also like the McCartney-esque bass line in the chorus.

That line about The Posies.... there's still a latent ringing in my ears from when I saw them at The Zoo in Pullman, WA back in 1993. Yikes.

Written on the piano, if you couldn't already tell from the chord sequence.

Lyrics

Thought I knew what quiet was
Until I heard your quaking voice
Thought I could tell right from wrong
Until I tried to make a choice
Thought I knew what happy was
Until it was obscured by joy
Thought I saw things oh so clearly
But was only looking through
Destroyed

Oh mama dear
Come here, come here
It's just that I'm feeling worried and low
Why is this world breaking
Is there something I can do
To hold the walls up for me and you?

Thought I know what loud's all about
Until I heard The Posies play
Thought I knew what dreams were for
Til I awoke and faced the day
Thought I knew what family's all about
Until family wasn't there
Thought I knew what color was
Until Autumn lit Her lovely flares...
I thought I knew what music was
Til The Color of Spring filled my ears
I thought I knew how women felt
But I could only guess from the tears
Thought I understood the weight of things
Til I carried my cross around
Thought I knew what lost was all about
Until I could no longer be found

Oh mama dear
Come here, come here
It's just that I'm feeling worried and low
I know this world's breaking
Is there something I can do
To hold the walls up for me and you?
